Gameplay

The Force Unleashed is a third-person action game in which the player's character's weapons are the Force and a lightsaber.Developers treated the main character's lightsaber like another Force power, and wanted to ensure "something visceral and cool" happened with each button-push. The game has a combo system for stringing lightsaber attacks and for combining lightsaber attacks with Force powers. Experience points earned by killing enemies and finding artifacts can be used to increase Starkiller's powers and traits. The game is intended to be "easy to pick up and play"; the development team included "horrible" gamers to help ensure the game's accessibility Players can "play it easy" and "run and gun" through the game, but those who take a stealthy, more tactical approach "will be rewarded". The game includes enemies that are easy to overcome; game difficulty arises from presenting these enemies in "overwhelming" numbers that can wear down the player's character. The enemies, which number over 50, have various strengths and weaknesses; developers faced the difficulty of effectively placing them throughout the game's varied environments. Additionally, enemies learn from the player's character's attacks; using the same attack on different characters can sometimes lead to the player's character doing less damage.

Cinnamon Bread

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup granulated sugar

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup sour milk or buttermilk*

1/4 cup vegetable oil

2 large eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Topping (recipe follows)

1.Preheat oven to 350*F (175*C). Grease a 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan. Set aside.

2.Measure all ingredients in order given in large mixing bowl. Beat with electric mixer for 3 minutes. Pour into prepared pan and smooth the surface. Sprinkle with topping and using a metal spatula, cut in with a light swirling motion to give a marbled effect.

3.Bake for about 50 minutes or until tested done when a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. After 10 minutes, remove from pan to wire rack to cool.

4.Store tightly wrapped.

Topping

1 1/2 tablespoons granulated sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 tablepoon butter, softened.

Combine all ingredients until crumbly.

*To make sour milk, add milk to 1 tablespoon white vinegar to measure 1 cup

By Ben Kuchera Guitar Hero: Metallica is next in line to keep the Guitar Hero updates coming, and USA Today has some interesting information about what we can expect from the game. Expect a bigger challenge than what you may be used to, and you'll be able to hook up a second pedal to your drums in order to barely keep up with the rest of the band. Just like Lars!

The game's story will focus on a young band trying to make its way, and will feature not only songs by Metallica but also by bands that have influenced the band. The list of bands is impressive: Queen, the Foo Fighters, Alice in Chains, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Seger, Kyuss and Samhain will be providing tracks. For fans of rock music, that's a pretty intense list of talent.

The tracks will be given the full-band treatment, as you can play with up to three other people for the true Metallica experience. Lead designer Alan Flores claimed that the game will be "a couple grades harder than Guitar Hero World Tour."

The first Guitar Hero title centered around a single band was Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, and that title was an enjoyable, if short, look at the influential band. The problem was that the production values were slightly rough, with grainy video and some odd song choices. The songs also couldn't be used in any other Guitar Hero game; do people really want to put in a disc and play that much of one band? Justifying the $50+ expected price would be much easier if you could export the songs to World Tour after playing through the career mode of the game.

Guitar Hero: Metallica is expected in the first half of 2009 for the PS3, Xbox 360, PS2, and Nintendo Wii.

The players: Director: Pierre Morel, Writer: Robert Mark Kamen, Luc Besson, Cast: Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Anjul Nigam, Goran Kostic, Holly Valance

Facts of interest: Morel's next is "From Paris With Love" with John Travolta.
The plot: Liam Neeson stars as a former government operative who stops at nothing to find his daughter and free her from her kidnappers.
Our thoughts: Liam Neeson goes all Jason Bourne and Jack Bauer on us in Pierre Morel’s fast-paced action thriller “Taken,” and to be honest, watching him eliminate bad guy after bad guy for nearly 93 minutes is plenty of fun.
That said, “Taken” is certainly not a perfect film. The story line has its flaws and is totally unrealistic, the characters lack depth and aren’t really memorable, and even the movie’s ending isn’t as vibrant as I expected it to be. Now, if this were a boring film, I would probably spend quite some time complaining about all these issues, but considering “Taken” is incredibly entertaining and even decently suspenseful, I cannot help but praise Morel’s efforts.Written by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen, the movie introduces us to Bryan Mills (Neeson), a former government operative who faces the longest 96 hours of his life when his beloved daughter Kim (Maggie Grace) gets kidnapped during a vacation stay in Paris. But Bryan is a real professional, and you better not want to mess with him… ever! Determined to hunt down and kill the bastards who took his daughter, Bryan quickly puts the pieces of the puzzle together and travels to Paris to take his personal, bloody revenge.
And wow… does he kick butt with style! As I already mentioned above, Bryan is like a mix between Bourne and Bauer. Not only is he unrealistically smart and always a step ahead of his enemies, but he also shows absolutely no scruples about killing without mercy.No matter what tricky situation he ends up in, Bryan always finds a quick way out, and following him on his quest to track down a bunch ruthless kidnappers all across Paris ends up being a wildly absorbing experience. None of this is at all credible, but it’s darn enjoyable to watch.Neeson is undoubtedly the perfect man for this badass role, and the character of the unbeatable hero suits him very well. I mean, how can you not cheer for a guy who easily locates untraceable criminals and takes out a whole army of armed gangsters at once without even breaking a sweat.

The final word: If you’re willing to ignore the film’s few flaws, you should have no trouble enjoying “Taken” to the fullest extent. Morel’s direction is a little too Paul Greengrass-like at times, but he does a fabulous job at keeping his plot operating at full speed throughout. “Taken” is an explosive thriller that will keep you engaged until the very end.

Review: "Knowing"
From Time Out New York

At the opening of a school’s time capsule sealed 50 years earlier, quiet kid Caleb (Canterbury) comes across a letter full of strange numbers. His father (Cage), a brilliant astronomer who lectures on causality and randomness (what science course is that covered in again?), notices that the numbers seem to be a chronicle of a half century’s worth of large-scale disasters, complete with death tolls. Naturally, the last few entries feature dates that are just around the corner. Uh-oh.
Knowing tosses around paranormal-thriller clichés with gleeful abandon: Strangers stand menacingly still, watching our heroes from afar; pale, eerily impassive little girls pop up as though on loan from The Shining; and we even get a visit to that old standby, the “crazy room,” where an obsessive person has covered the walls with annotated newspaper clippings. Director Alex Proyas (The Crow) keeps things breezily enjoyable for a while, even as he’s unleashing such mayhem as a subway disaster and an airline crash (including burning people running at the camera). Then comes the film’s final third, a mélange of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Christian eschatology that will make you wish the film had ended 15 minutes sooner.
